Principal's Message

Welcome to West Forest Intermediate!

Our school has a long tradition of providing an excellent academic program to all of our students. We are an accredited member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and serve a diverse population of approximately 300 students in 3rd through 5th grade.

The Alabama College and Career Ready Standards are the foundation for our academic work.

The Common Core State Standards are a set of consistent, high quality academic benchmarks that clearly define the knowledge and skills all students should master by the end of each school year in order to be on track for success in college and career. The standards were created through a state-led initiative and have been adopted by more than 40 states. In addition, we are continuing to build our technology program by allowing students to use our eReaders and bring their own devises for research and reading. All classrooms are equipped with ThinkPad tablets, desktop computers, laptops, slates, document cameras and data projectors. Our staff wants your child to have the tools they will need to be college and career ready!

Our instruction is based on a balanced literacy model in which each child receives at least, if not more than, one-hundred and twenty minutes of literacy instruction on a daily basis based on the McGraw-Hill Reading Series and ToolKit Strategies. As a school-Wide Title I school, we offer students a wide range of reading instruction based on each child's individual reading level. We utilize Everyday Math and supplement with Investigations Mathematics Program. Everyday Mathematics is a rigorous curriculum, with instruction that deeply connects conceptual understanding with real world applications, which supports life-long fluency. Science instruction is facilitated by using the AMSTI Curriculum.

In addition, our students are provided an active physical education program, along with weekly instruction in music, art, and guidance by certified specialists. Our media center provides planned media lessons and also offers a flexible schedule for students to work on projects and checkout books. Additionally, students are assigned weekly sessions in the computer lab to work on projects and academic programs.

As an educator with over twenty years of experience, it will be my privilege to serve the students and staff at West Forest Intermediate. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at pam.fourtenbary@opelikaschools.org or call at 334-745-9737.
